MBA Admissions Essay Strategies For Success
Writing the MBA essay portion of the business school application sometimes causes students some difficulty. It is true, however, that even though the first and most important of requirements is academic skill, it is not enough and neither is a resume. Your ability to compose an essay that clearly conveys your experiences and goals in writing form, with your admission largely dependent upon this ability. The significance of this process is a review of your life, both personal and professional. The information in the essay needs to be concise, powerful, very clear. This MBA Admissions Essay is crucial to your acceptance. One very important question will be why MBA? This essay will include questions and answers to the relevance of your past experience.
What are your long and or short term career goals? Will this MBA program meet your needs and help you obtain your goals? They may ask you to fill in gaps and for an assessment of your strengths. Answer each question an honest and personal answer. You may have accumulated several years of business experience, but keep the usual business terminology out of the essay and no buzzwords just for the sake of them. The admissions officers are looking for your abilities, accomplishments and that is what is going to be in your essay.
You need to elaborate on your business skills, personal accomplishments perhaps in music or sports, goals completed and those for the future, any community service and any challenges you may have had and their solutions. Write clearly and concisely. A good essay is grounded with your personal information. You do not assert. You show and tell and by this I mean paint them a picture. Describe the action or skill you are writing about don’t merely say what it is. Do not fill in with unnecessary information only that which is pertinent to your theme or subject. You will, at some point, have some room to explain deficiencies in your past and take opportunity to do so and be specific about it. Then you can interject the positive results of that deficiency.
Remember to vary the sentence structure. By that I mean make some shorter and others longer. Shorter paragraphs always make an essay easier to read. Get some opinions about your essay, perhaps from friends or family. With questions like – Do I have a theme? Is there an introduction, middle and conclusion? Do I have enough short and long sentences? Is there any random writing which is not pertinent? Is the essay clear and precise? Do I catch the interest of the reader right away? Just to give you some questions you can ask those who let read your essay. Remember this is not an autobiography of your life and it should not be.
Unfortunately it is easy to put too much information in a short essay. Be concise, specific, clear, well organized and coherent. And edit again and again to make sure you remove all information that is not pertinent and all grammar errors and spelling errors. An MBA Admissions Essay must be free of all errors and professional looking. This will be the difference between being accepted or rejected by the school.
